Some questions you may have.
What is Graphic Design?
Simply put, graphic design is the process of taking basic components like copy, photography, a logo and a bunch of other things, then combining them into one cohesive package. It seems simple enough but there is a lot more to it then that. See the next point to find out why you should hire a graphic designer.
Why do I need a Graphic Designer?
Just like you wouldn't represent yourself in court if you aren't a lawyer, it doesn't make sense to create your own brochure or logo if you don't know what you are doing. There is a lot more to graphic design then arranging things on a page and calling it a day.
As a graphic designer I have spent the last 16 years working on pretty much every project imaginable. I know how to design for your target market, how to source stock photography, which fonts to use, how to set files up perfect for print and so many more factors.
Why should I trust you with my hard earned cash?
So why me? You are here, I'm assuming, because you like my style from the portfolio you have viewed. Or maybe you were just really impressed with my headshot on the about page. Either way, in trusting me with your project, you know you are getting years of experience and a final piece that is going to be exactly what you need it to be. Plus, I am very fun to work with and as I you can see I don't take myself too seriously. But, I will work with you one on one to ensure you are completely happy with the finished result.
Can't I just get my friend who has a computer and Microsoft Word to design my brochure?
Sure. Have at 'er. I'm sure they can produce something that will look good to you but is it really functional? In the end it's going to look like it was created in Word and that is what is essentially going to represent you when people see it. In entrusting a graphic designer, you are ensuring that professional programs are used that are going to be able to way beyond anything your best friend can do in Word.
Can you create a logo for $10? It shouldn't take long...
This is probably one of the biggest pet peeves amongst graphic designers. The answer is a huge NO! Any self respecting graphic designer will just not do this. Unless it's a favour or they don't value their work. There is so much that goes into making a logo and most people don't understand this. Even something as simple as the Apple logo looks like it took 5 minutes to create. That is simply not the case. There is a lot of research and thought that goes into creating a logo. So next time you want a cheap logo done by someone, keep in mind that, that logo is the first thing people are going to represent your brand with.
Why do Graphic Designers charge so much?
I'd like to think I am quite reasonable with my fees but even then it's probably more then what most people would ever think to spend on design. We aren't even talking advertising agency prices either. Just like you wouldn't work for $10 an hour nor should we. Schooling, equipment overhead, time doing research and just all around creation of the design takes time. Often there are different concepts presented, revisions, sourcing of imagery or in my case, even taking the photography itself. Then once the concept is approved it's a matter of actually designing it and making sure it's perfect. Then we have to set it up for print and ensure it's going to look just as good physically as it does on the screen. Graphic Design is a trade. You wouldn't expect a plumber to work for cheap. If you do hire a cheap plumber, you are risking having crappy work done. (sorry couldn't help it)
How do you determine the cost of different projects?
Depending on the type of project, the cost will either be more or less. I have created a handy pricing list that shows you general prices. These can vary a bit depending on the scope of the project but it's a good starting point. Some graphic designer charge by the hour, I find it easier to just charge on a per project basis. With that being said, this is assuming you aren't going to have 25 rounds of revisions!
What do you use to create your brilliant designs?
I work on an iMac and the main programs I use are Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Lightroom for photography. That's it! If I do happen to do some websites there are a couple other programs I use for that. Even though I work on Mac, it's very easy to make sure files view and work on PC's as well.
What if I have no idea what I want?
Good question! I will work with you to decide what best fits your design needs. We can talk about colours, exactly what size brochure makes the most sense, whether or not you need stationery etc... At the end of it you will have a clear vision of what is needed. I've been doing this a long time so there is nothing to worry about.
Do you write the copy and supply the images or do I?
I am not a copywriter. So if you have copy to provide, great. We can work with that. Otherwise if you need something written we can either work together or get a professional to do that for you. If you have images to supply we can definitely consider using them as long as they are of good quality and fit the scope of the project. Otherwise stock photography nowadays is fairly price. Plus, did I mention I was photographer? That is always an option to.
Can I make changes during the process of the design?
Most certainly! As I said before, you need to trust my design decisions but at the same time we need to work together to create a piece that we are both happy with. Sometimes clients get a bit overzealous with their changes but that does come with the territory. Just keep in mind that lots of rounds of revisions could potentially add to the cost.
Can't you just create me something in Microsoft Word so I can make the changes?
No. I don't design in Microsoft Word. I use the professional programs listed above. Once the project is done I supply you with all the working files so if you have the programs you can do the changes yourself. If you don't, I would be more then happy to help you out down the road if you ever need to change the design.
What are typical turnaround times?
I am fast, and I pride myself on that. Depending on the project you are you looking at a 2-3 turnaround time to see the first proof. Sometimes sooner. To complete the entire project, timing depends on the scope of it. Regardless, I will be upfront and give you a clear timeline.
Why are you cheaper then advertising firms?
With ad agencies you have a lot more overhead. In choosing me, it's must me. I don't mark projects up drastically. I price things based on what I think my time and skills are worth.
Do you design websites?
Yes. I don't do complex websites but if you are looking for something simple and great looking I can definitely help you out. If you are looking for something a bit more involved I would be more then happy to recommend a programmer.
How do I get the files?
Once the project is done I deliver a high res pdf which you can then print on your end with your printer of choice. I can also supply you with all the original artwork including stock photos used. That way, if you decided to get changes down the road and you need to hand off the files to someone else, you have the option to do so. Either way, the final files I supply are all print ready.
Who prints my files once I get them?
Like I mentioned above, you receive all the print ready files so you can definitely do that on your end. I can always recommend different printing options as well. If you do have a printer in mind I don't mind working with them to ensure they receive the files and everything goes as planned.
How do I pay you?
Currently I accept online transfer, cash, paypal and cheque.
How many pets do you have?
We have 2 cats. They are almost 2 years old, and they are crazy but always entertaining.
Rumour has it you do photography, how do I see your awesome photos?
Wow, I'm flattered. Thank you! Head on over to my photography website to view my work there. www.chondonphotography.com
